The Pressure Behind a Well-Run Tenafly Household

From the street, everything looks handled. Two careers, a house off Knickerbocker Road, kids in schools people move here for. Inside, something quieter is happening.

A marriage where nobody argues anymore because nobody really talks anymore. A tenth grader who has stopped eating lunch and won’t say why. A parent who cannot tell whether helping their adult son is helping or holding him in place.

Plenty of families here handle it by staying busy. The calendar fills, the subject changes, and another year passes. That approach works right up until it stops working, usually at the worst possible moment.

How Therapy Actually Starts With Us

How Therapy Actually Starts With Us

We are Equality Mental Health, a specialized psychotherapy practice serving Bergen County and Northern New Jersey with in-person and telehealth therapy. From our office in River Edge, we work with adults, couples, adolescents, children, multi partner relationships, and families.

Therapy with us starts with dignity, respect, and truly listening. Our work is grounded in an understanding of intersectionality and lived experience. We provide affirming, evidence-based care with a distinctive focus on sexuality, gender, sex, and relationships, alongside mood and anxiety concerns.

You will meet with a clinician who helps you notice patterns, name what hurts, and build steadier coping tools. If you want deeper insight work, we make room for that too. Our founder, H. Craig Cutler, is a licensed clinical social worker and certified psychoanalyst with over 20 years in private practice.

When it fits your goals, we can also incorporate focused trauma work. Learn more about our EMDR therapy option.

What we help with most often:

  • Anxiety, panic, and chronic stress
  • Depression, low motivation, and feeling numb
  • Trauma, PTSD, and painful memories
  • Couples counseling for relationship conflict and communication breakdowns
  • LGBTQ+ affirming therapy and identity support
  • Grief, loss, and major life changes
  • Sexuality, intimacy, and relationship concerns

Four Services Tenafly Searches Most, and What Each One Involves

  • Anxiety and depression therapy. Sessions look at what’s driving the symptom, not just the symptom, so you can respond to stress differently instead of managing it alone. Read more.
  • Couples and relationship counseling. For partners who’ve drifted or are working through betrayal, we focus on communication, unmet needs, and what each person wants next.
  • Teen and family therapy. Academic pressure runs high in this district. We work with parents and kids on conflict, boundaries, and the patterns that keep repeating at home.
  • EMDR and trauma treatment. A structured method for experiences that still surface unexpectedly. Your therapist first assesses whether EMDR suits your history and goals.

Insurance, Fees, and What Makes Our Practice Different

  • Insurance accepted: Aetna, AmeriHealth, Anthem BCBS, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Empire BCBS, Beacon Health, Cigna, Health Net, Horizon BCBS, Medicare, Medicaid, Optum, Tricare, and United Healthcare.
  • Fees and sliding scale: We offer a sliding scale based on ability to pay, eligibility, and scheduling availability. Copays are due at the time of service.
  • Identity-aware care: Sexuality, gender, culture, and family structure are taken seriously here, not treated as side notes.
  • Two ways to meet: In person in River Edge, or secure telehealth for eligible clients across New Jersey.
  • Psychiatric consultation: Available by referral from one of our clinicians.

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy in Tenafly

Cost depends on your plan, your session type, and whether you qualify for our sliding scale. We accept most major insurers, and services may be fully or partially covered. Call your insurer and ask about outpatient behavioral health benefits, your deductible, your copay, and whether you need a referral. If that’s confusing, call us, and we’ll walk you through the questions.

Our River Edge office sits about 15 to 20 minutes from Tenafly, roughly 4 to 6 miles via West Clinton Avenue and Kinderkamack Road. Traffic near Route 4 can add a few minutes at rush hour. Many Tenafly clients book a mix of in-person and telehealth sessions so a bad traffic day never costs them an appointment.

Yes. We work with children, adolescents, and families, including situations involving school pressure, anxiety, withdrawal, family conflict, and parent-teen communication. Parents are usually part of the process to some degree, and we discuss the level of involvement openly at the start so everyone understands how confidentiality works.

It varies. Some Tenafly clients come for a defined stretch around one issue, like a loss or a decision point. Others stay longer to work through patterns that have been running for years. You and your therapist set goals together at the start and revisit them as things shift.

Yes. We work with couples, individuals within a relationship, and multi-partner relationships. Common reasons include emotional distance, repeated arguments, rebuilding trust after infidelity, and deciding whether to stay together. Therapy is not about being told what to do. It’s about understanding the relationship clearly enough to choose well.

Telehealth may be available depending on your location, clinical needs, licensing requirements, and therapist availability. It suits people with packed schedules or difficult commutes. Some concerns are better addressed in person, and your therapist will say so if that applies to your situation.
